Frequently asked questions
Can I take Zolcid 20mg Capsule with domperidone?
Domperidone and Zolcid 20mg Capsule can be safely taken together. Clinical studies have not reported any harmful effects when combined. A fixed-dose combination of these medications is also available. Domperidone increases gut motility, while Zolcid 20mg Capsule decreases stomach acid production, making this combination effective in treating reflux esophagitis and other acidic conditions like heartburn, intestinal ulcers, and stomach ulcers.
What should I know before taking Zolcid 20mg Capsule?
Before taking Zolcid 20mg Capsule, avoid it if you are using medicine containing atazanavir or nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Inform your doctor about any liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, or indigestion. Share a list of all medications you're taking with your doctor because some may interact or be affected by this medicine. If you have experienced a skin rash or allergy to Zolcid 20mg Capsule in the past, inform your doctor. It should not be given to children younger than 1 year of age or those weighing less than 10 kg.
Can Zolcid 20mg Capsule cause diarrhea?
Yes, it may cause diarrhea as a side effect in some individuals. This is usually not serious, but if you experience persistent watery stools with stomach cramps and fever that does not improve, seek medical attention immediately.
For how long can Zolcid 20mg Capsule be taken?
Take Zolcid 20mg Capsule as directed by your doctor. Duration of use will depend on your condition. Don't stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.
Can Zolcid 20mg Capsule cause calcium deficiency and osteoporosis?
It can cause bone thinning (osteoporosis) as it decreases calcium absorption, leading to a higher risk of fractures over long-term use. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or are on corticosteroids (which can increase the risk). Discuss with your doctor ways to prevent osteoporosis, and consider calcium or vitamin D supplements.
What are the long-term side effects of Zolcid 20mg Capsule?
After longer use (more than 3 months), certain long-term side effects might appear. These include low magnesium levels in your blood, which can cause fatigue, confusion, dizziness, shakiness, and lightheadedness. Muscle twitches or irregular heartbeat may also occur. Prolonged use beyond one year could increase the risk of bone fractures (due to decreased calcium levels), stomach infections, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency might lead to anemia, causing fatigue, weakness, and pale skin. Additionally, you may experience palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence, or nerve problems such as numbness, tingling, and gait difficulties.
Does Zolcid 20mg Capsule cause vitamin deficiencies?
It may lead to vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. When taken orally, vitamin B12 needs an acidic environment for absorption from the stomach, which this medicine reduces. You may need vitamin B12 supplements along with it. The clinical significance of a decrease in vitamin C levels is not yet well-understood, so vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.
Can Zolcid 20mg Capsule be used by cardiac patients?
Patients with cardiac problems can take this medicine under their doctor's supervision. However, it can interact with certain drugs like clopidogrel or digoxin which might be used in a patient with heart disease. Close monitoring by a doctor is necessary for patients on these medications together.
