Introduction
Xtraclav Dry Syrup is an antibiotic medicine that helps treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, lungs, teeth, skin, and urinary tract. It is capable of killing bacteria that have become resistant to other therapies and thus also helps treat tuberculosis that is resistant to other treatments. You can give Xtraclav Dry Syrup to your child with or without food. It is better to give it with food as that helps increase absorption and decrease the risk of stomach upset. The doctor may prescribe giving it two to three times a day. Medicine dose depends on the severity of the infection, its type, and your child’s body weight and age. So, stick to the dose, time, and way prescribed. If your child vomits the medicine within 30 minutes of intake, let the child calm down and repeat the dose. Do not double dose if it's the time for the next dose.

How it works
Xtraclav Dry Syrup is an antibiotic. It has two active agents, amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) essential for the survival of the bacteria. Whereas, clavulanic acid serves a special purpose of inhibiting an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that is produced by resistant bacteria. This makes the combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid an effective line of treatment for many types of infections.
Quick Tips
Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Never give Xtraclav Dry Syrup until and unless prescribed by the doctor. Do not give Xtraclav Dry Syrup to treat common cold and flu-like symptoms caused by viruses. Check 'expiry' before giving Xtraclav Dry Syrup to your child. Immediately discard all the expired medicines.

Frequently asked questions
Can other medicines be given at the same time as Xtraclav Dry Syrup?
Xtraclav Dry Syrup may interact with other medications. It is essential to inform your doctor about all other medications your child is taking before starting treatment. Consult your child's doctor for guidance regarding combining medicines.
Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Xtraclav Dry Syrup?
Generally, antibiotics do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a negative reaction in children who have recently received one. However, it's crucial to ensure the child recovers from the illness before vaccination. Once your child feels better, vaccination can be administered as per your doctor's recommendation.
Which lab tests may my child undergo while taking Xtraclav Dry Syrup on a long-term basis?
Long-term therapy may involve regular monitoring of kidney and liver function tests to assess the child's overall condition. This is important for ensuring proper care during treatment.
Can I give a higher than the recommended dose of Xtraclav Dry Syrup to my child?
Giving a higher dose than recommended can increase the risk of side effects and must be avoided. If your child experiences worsened symptoms, consult with their doctor for re-evaluation.
Can I stop giving Xtraclav Dry Syrup to my child when the symptoms are relieved?
Do not discontinue treatment before completing the full course of Xtraclav Dry Syrup. Even if you notice improvement, it's crucial to complete the prescribed duration as the medicine may continue to offer benefits for a period even after symptoms subside.
Can the use of Xtraclav Dry Syrup cause diarrhea?
Yes, Xtraclav Dry Syrup can sometimes cause diarrhea. It's important to understand that antibiotics are designed to eliminate harmful bacteria, and this process can potentially affect the balance of helpful bacteria in your child's stomach, leading to diarrhea. In case of diarrhea, encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids like water or other safe liquids. If diarrhea persists, consult with your doctor. Always remember to avoid giving any medication without consulting a medical professional.
Do all viral common colds result in secondary bacterial infection?
Most common cold cases do not involve secondary bacterial infections, and antibiotics are usually unnecessary for this type of illness. However, it's crucial to consult with your child's doctor if you suspect a possible infection or if symptoms don't subside after several days.
The mucus coming out of my child’s nose is yellow-green. Is it a sign of a bacterial infection?
Yellow or green mucus in the nose does not automatically mean a bacterial infection, especially during a common cold. It's normal for the mucus to thicken and change color as your child goes through this phase. It usually lasts for 7-10 days.
Is there any sign which shows that my child needs immediate medical attention?
Seek immediate medical attention in case of serious allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, skin rash), gastrointestinal infections (severe diarrhea), and liver damage (pale skin, unusual fatigue, nausea, vomiting). These symptoms may indicate a severe reaction requiring expert intervention.
