Vactyph Vaccine is a vaccine used to help prevent typhoid fever, which is caused by a bacteria called *Salmonella typhi*. Typhoid fever can be spread through contaminated food or water.
Vactyph Vaccine works by causing your body to produce its own protection against typhoid fever. It does this by making substances called antibodies that destroy the *Salmonella typhi* organism. If you have been vaccinated against *Salmonella typhi*, your body is able to attack that organism if you come in contact with it.
Usually, several weeks after vaccination are needed for full antibody development against typhoid fever. Most people will make enough antibodies against *Salmonella typhi*. However, as with all vaccines, 100% protection cannot be guaranteed.
No. Vactyph Vaccine will not cause typhoid fever. It only helps your body in producing antibodies against it, so that your body can fight the infection if you are exposed to it in future.
You must have one dose at least 2 weeks before you may be exposed to typhoid fever. If you are continually or repeatedly exposed to *Salmonella typhi* organism, a booster dose is recommended every 2 to 3 years.
Vactyph Vaccine is given as an injection, usually into your upper arm muscle, by a doctor or nurse. For children, the muscle of the upper thigh may be preferred. Vactyph Vaccine should not be injected directly into a vein, or any blood vessel.
To help prevent typhoid fever, in addition to vaccination, it is important to practice good personal hygiene, food safety, and water hygiene. This includes washing hands with soap and clean water frequently, particularly before eating or preparing food; using clean water for drinking and cooking; and avoiding contact with contaminated water sources.
