Frequently asked questions
Is Tenefit-M Tablet SR safe to use?
Yes, Tenefit-M Tablet SR is generally safe when used as prescribed by the doctor. However, it can cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, nasal congestion, sore throat, respiratory tract infection and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level). Hypoglycemia may be more likely if you are also taking insulin or sulfonylureas. If you experience any persistent problem while taking this medicine, inform your doctor.
Can Tenefit-M Tablet SR cause hypoglycemia?
Tenefit-M Tablet SR itself usually doesn't cause hypoglycemia on its own. However, it might occur if there is insufficient calorie intake while taking this medicine. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include nausea, headache, irritability, hunger, sweating, dizziness, fast heart rate and feeling anxious or shaky. These symptoms are more likely to be noticed if you miss meals, drink alcohol, over-exercise, or take other antidiabetic medicines together with Tenefit-M Tablet SR. Regular monitoring of blood sugar level is therefore important. It is recommended to always carry glucose tablets, honey or fruit juice with you.
Can Tenefit-M Tablet SR cause nausea and vomiting?
Yes, Tenefit-M Tablet SR can cause nausea and vomiting in some people. In case of vomiting, drink plenty of water or other fluids by taking small frequent sips. Consult your doctor if vomiting persists and you notice signs of dehydration such as dark colored and strong smelling urine and a low frequency of urination. Do not take any other medicine without consulting your doctor.
Are there any contraindications for using Tenefit-M Tablet SR?
Tenefit-M Tablet SR should not be used by people with known allergy to any of its components or excipients. It is also harmful for patients with severe kidney impairment, liver impairment, congestive heart failure, lactic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Can Tenefit-M Tablet SR cause lactic acidosis?
Yes, using Tenefit-M Tablet SR can lead to lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a rare side effect of metformin use and is called MALA (Metformin-associated lactic acidosis). This occurs when lactic acid levels rise in the blood. It's important to avoid this medicine if you have underlying kidney disease, are older or consume large amounts of alcohol. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include muscle pain or weakness, dizziness, tiredness, feeling cold in arms and legs, difficulty in breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or slow heart rate. If you experience these symptoms, stop taking Tenefit-M Tablet SR immediately and consult your doctor.
Can Tenefit-M Tablet SR cause Vitamin B12 deficiency?
Yes, long-term use of Tenefit-M Tablet SR can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. It interferes with the absorption of vitamin B12 in the stomach. This leads to anemia and nerve problems like tingling or numbness in hands and feet, weakness, urinary problems, change in mental status and difficulty in maintaining balance (ataxia). It is important to consult your doctor if you experience these symptoms. They may advise monitoring of B12 levels and prescribe a vitamin B12 supplement if needed.
