Frequently asked questions

What is Tacronid Cream used for?

Tacronid Cream is a medication that modulates the immune system. It works by suppressing the activity of the immune system, making it less active. It is used to treat moderate to severe eczema (atopic dermatitis) in adults who do not respond to steroids or develop side effects from using them. In atopic dermatitis, the skin's immune system undergoes an overreaction and causes skin inflammation leading to itchiness, redness, and dryness. Tacronid Cream acts on this abnormal immune response and alters it, thereby relieving the skin inflammation and itchiness.

What are the side effects of Tacronid Cream?

Tacronid Cream, when applied to the skin, may cause skin irritation, burning sensation, and itching at the site of application. These are usually mild to moderate in severity and typically resolve within one week of starting the treatment. Redness is also a common manifestation along with sensations of warmth, pain, altered sensation, and rash at the site of application. Using it increases the patient's risk of getting inflamed or infected hair follicles, cold sores, acne, and generalized herpes simplex infections.

Is Tacronid Cream ointment safe?

Compared to other immunosuppressive medications, Tacronid Cream has been found to be a safe and effective short-term treatment for atopic dermatitis. When applied to the affected skin area, its absorption into the bloodstream is minimal. Therefore, side effects are less compared to when taken orally.

Does Tacronid Cream have abuse potential?

No, Tacronid Cream does not have abuse potential and therefore is not a controlled substance. Controlled substances have potential for abuse so they require permission by authorities and medical professionals for use.

Does Tacronid Cream cause cancer?

Long-term use of Tacronid Cream has been associated with an increased risk of lymph node tumors called lymphoma. Some studies have found that a small number of patients who used Tacronid Cream ointment or similar medications developed skin cancer or lymphoma. It is essential to consult your doctor if you need to use Tacronid Cream for more than six weeks or if your eczema symptoms are not improving, or worsening with time during treatment.

Is Tacronid Cream a steroid?

No, Tacronid Cream is not a steroid. It is a medication that modulates the immune system's activity. It is used in the treatment of eczema, primarily in atopic dermatitis. An advantage of Tacronid Cream is its lack of skin thinning (atrophy) or other steroid-related side effects.
