Frequently asked questions
Can I take Somidom 20mg Capsule with domperidone?
This medicine can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing gut motility, and Somidom 20mg Capsule decreases acid production in the stomach. This combination is very effective in treating reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.
What should I know before taking Somidom 20mg Capsule?
Do not take it if you are already using medicines containing atazanavir and nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Tell your doctor about any liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, or indigestion. Inform your doctor about all other medications you're taking because they may affect or be affected by this medicine. Report any allergic skin reactions with this medicine to your doctor. It should not be given to children under 1 year of age or whose body weight is less than 10 kgs. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using it to avoid potential harm to the baby.
Can Somidom 20mg Capsule cause diarrhea?
Yes, it may cause diarrhea as a side effect in some individuals. This is usually not severe but if you experience persistent watery stools that do not subside along with stomach cramps and fever, seek immediate medical attention.
For how long can I take Somidom 20mg Capsule?
Take it as prescribed by your doctor. The duration may vary depending on your condition. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.
Can Somidom 20mg Capsule cause calcium deficiency and osteoporosis?
It can increase the risk of osteoporosis (thinning of bones) by decreasing calcium absorption, leading to calcium deficiency. This increases the likelihood of fractures in long-term use, such as hip, wrist, or spine fractures. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or are taking corticosteroids, which can further increase the risk of osteoporosis. Your doctor may recommend calcium or vitamin D supplements to reduce this risk. They will help you manage the condition.
What are the long-term side effects of Somidom 20mg Capsule?
Long-term use (more than 3 months) may lead to side effects like low blood magnesium levels, which can cause fatigue, confusion, dizziness, shakiness, or lightheadedness. You might experience muscle twitches or an irregular heartbeat as well. If you continue taking it for over a year, there's an increased risk of fractures (due to decreased calcium levels), particularly in the hip, wrist, or spine, along with stomach infections and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, making you feel more tired, weak, or pale. Additionally, you may experience palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence (gas), or nerve problems like numbness, tingling, and walking difficulties.
Does Somidom 20mg Capsule cause vitamin deficiencies?
It may cause vitamin B12 deficiency. This occurs because the medication causes a decrease in gastric acid secretion, making vitamin B12 absorption more challenging. You might need to take vitamin B12 supplements along with it. The clinical significance of decreased vitamin C levels is not yet known, so vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.
Can Somidom 20mg Capsule be used by cardiac patients?
Patients with cardiovascular disease can take this medication as prescribed by their doctor. However, it may interact with certain medications (e.g., clopidogrel or digoxin) that are commonly used by people with a heart condition. Patients taking these medications together should be closely monitored by a doctor.
