Cefixime (50mg)

Key Information

Short Description

Sigcef 50mg Syrup is an antibiotic medicine used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including ear, eye, nose, throat, lung, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract infections. It can also be used to treat uncomplicated typhoid fever in children and adolescents.

Dosage Form

Syrup

Introduction

Sigcef 50mg Syrup is best given an hour before or two hours after meals as that ensures better absorption. In case your child develops a stomach upset, prefer giving it with meals. The dose and duration depend upon the type and severity of the infection, so stick to the dose, time, and way prescribed by the doctor. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of the intake, give the same dose again but do not double dose if it's the time for the next dose. Do not give this medicine to your child in case of cold and flu symptoms as they are usually caused by viruses and antibiotics don’t treat viral infections. Doctors prescribe this medicine for cough and cold only when they detect any underlying secondary bacterial infection.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Sigcef 50mg Syrup may be taken with or without food but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How it works

Sigcef 50mg Syrup is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is essential for the survival of the bacteria. By doing so, this medicine stops the infection-causing bacteria from growing further and prevents the infection from spreading without making them resistant to further treatment.

Quick Tips

Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or become resistant or cause another infection. Give this medicine with food to avoid an upset stomach. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Conditions like common cold and flu are caused by viruses. Never use this medicine for such conditions. Only give Sigcef 50mg Syrup to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses. Stop this medicine and immediately report to your child's doctor in case your child develops an itchy rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulties while taking this medicine.

Frequently asked questions

What if I give too much of Sigcef 50mg Syrup by mistake?

An extra dose of Sigcef 50mg Syrup is unlikely to cause harm. However, if you think you have given too much of Sigcef 50mg Syrup to your child, contact a doctor immediately. Overdose may lead to unwanted side effects and could worsen your child’s condition.

Are there any possible serious side effects of Sigcef 50mg Syrup?

Serious potential side effects include persistent vomiting, kidney damage, allergy, diarrhea, and severe gastrointestinal infections. Always seek immediate medical help if experiencing these symptoms.

Can other medicines be given at the same time as Sigcef 50mg Syrup?

Sigcef 50mg Syrup may interact with other medications or substances. Consult your doctor before taking any medication alongside this medicine, as they will advise on safe combinations.

Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Sigcef 50mg Syrup?

Most vaccines are not affected by antibiotics, and children taking antibiotics should not receive a vaccine until they are recovered from the illness. As soon as your child is feeling better, the vaccine can be given.

Which lab tests may my child undergo while taking Sigcef 50mg Syrup on a long-term basis?

Periodic kidney and liver function tests might be prescribed by the doctor for monitoring your child's condition during long-term use of Sigcef 50mg Syrup.

The mucus coming out of my child’s nose is yellow-green. Is it a sign of a bacterial infection?

Yellow or green mucus from the nose does not always indicate a bacterial infection. Common colds can cause this mucus to change color and thicken. These symptoms often resolve within 7-10 days.

Does a common cold caused by viruses always result in a secondary bacterial infection? When should I start an antibiotic to prevent infection?

In most cases, bacterial infections do not occur after viral infections. Antibiotics are only needed if your child’s doctor has diagnosed a bacterial infection. Always consult with your child's doctor before starting antibiotics.

Can Sigcef 50mg Syrup impact my child’s digestive system?

Children's stomachs are sensitive, and they may experience stomach upset while taking antibiotics. Antibiotics can also disrupt the good bacteria in their gut. This disruption might increase the risk of other infections during treatment.

Can Sigcef 50mg Syrup lead to bacterial resistance in my child?

Resistance to antibiotics occurs due to incorrect treatment, repeated use, or misuse of Sigcef 50mg Syrup. If you have used this medicine for a long time without consulting your doctor, there is a chance that bacteria may become resistant.

How long should I take Sigcef 50mg Syrup?
