Salt Composition

Ofloxacin (50mg) + Metronidazole (120mg) + Simethicone (10mg)

Key Information

Short Description

Quifix MS Syrup is a medicine used to treat bacterial infections in children.

Dosage Form

Syrup

Introduction

Quifix MS Syrup is given to children for the treatment of bacterial infections of the teeth, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and genital tract. This medicine is also given as an empirical antibiotic for infected diarrhea mixed with blood and serious infections like peritonitis.

Directions for Use

Quifix MS Syrup should only be given to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses.

Safety Information

Side Effects

No common side effects listed.

How it works

Quifix MS Syrup is a combination of three active ingredients. While two of its ingredients, namely ofloxacin and metronidazole are antibiotics, simethicone is a gas-absorbing agent that improves gastric tolerability of the combination. The antibiotic ingredients interfere with the genetic material of bacteria by impairing its DNA. This kills the infection-causing bacteria, preventing its growth and stopping the infection. On the other hand, Simethicone binds with the gas bubbles produced as a result of the other two ingredients or as a result of some other problem. By doing so, it aids in the removal of gases and provides relief in stomach pain and bloating.

Quick Tips

Diarrhea is a common side effect of this medicine. If it occurs, make sure your child drinks plenty of water. Your child may have an altered taste or furry tongue (coating of Quifix MS Syrup on tongue) after taking Quifix MS Syrup. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help. Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid within 2 hours of taking Quifix MS Syrup as these can affect the absorption of the medicine. Never use this medicine for the common cold and flu as they are caused by viruses and Quifix MS Syrup treats only bacterial infections. Discontinue Quifix MS Syrup and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing.

Frequently asked questions

What should I tell my doctor before giving Quifix MS Syrup to my child?

Inform your doctor if your child has any pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease, seizures, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, photosensitivity, neuromuscular disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, or genetic disorders affecting blood vessels. This is because Quifix MS Syrup may exacerbate these conditions and lead to complications.

Can I give Quifix MS Syrup with cough and cold medicines?

No, do not combine Quifix MS Syrup with cough and cold medicines that contain alcohol. This can cause a disulfiram reaction, resulting in symptoms like nausea, vomiting, flushing, dizziness, etc.

What if I accidentally give an overdose of Quifix MS Syrup?

If you suspect an overdose, contact your child's doctor immediately. While an extra dose is unlikely to cause harm, excessive consumption may lead to side effects such as seizures, tremors, severe headache, sudden weakness, blood cell abnormalities, and rapid heartbeat.

Why is my child not improving after taking Quifix MS Syrup for the prescribed duration?

If your child shows no improvement, it may mean that Quifix MS Syrup is ineffective against the infection-causing bacteria. Consult your child's doctor, who may prescribe alternative antibiotics with higher efficacy or administer treatment via intravenous injection in a hospital setting.

Can other medicines be taken alongside Quifix MS Syrup?

Quifix MS Syrup can interact with other medications or substances. Inform your child's doctor about any other medications they are taking before starting Quifix MS Syrup, and check with the doctor before giving any additional medicine.

How should I store Quifix MS Syrup?

Store Quifix MS Syrup at room temperature in a dry place, away from direct heat and light. Keep it out of children's reach to avoid accidental consumption.

Can my child receive vaccinations while on treatment with Quifix MS Syrup?

Generally, antibiotics do not interfere with vaccine ingredients or cause adverse reactions in children who have just been vaccinated. However, consider waiting until your child has recovered from the illness before administering vaccines.

Why is my child passing red-brown urine after taking Quifix MS Syrup?

The active ingredient metronidazole in Quifix MS Syrup can cause red-brown urine, which is a side effect rather than a pathological condition. This discoloration will resolve once the treatment with Quifix MS Syrup is completed.
