Key Information

Short Description

Pentasa 1gm Suppository is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat a type of bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis.

Dosage Form

Suppository

Introduction

Pentasa 1gm Suppository is only for rectal route and should not be taken orally. It must be used under the supervision of a doctor or healthcare professional. Stay in a lying position for at least 15 minutes after the insertion of suppositories. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for but take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen.

Directions for Use

Remove the wrapper from the suppository before inserting it. Keep lying down for about 15 minutes after insertion so that the suppository does not come out before it melts.

How it works

Pentasa 1gm Suppository is an aminosalicylate. It works directly on the site of inflammation (swelling) in the lower parts of large intestine (colon and rectum) to provide rapid relief from attacks of ulcerative colitis. It suppresses the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause intestinal inflammation thereby reducing ulceration bleeding and painful symptoms.

Quick Tips

You have been prescribed Pentasa 1gm Suppository for treating and lowering the symptoms of mild inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis. It is for administration into the back passage (rectum). It must not be taken by mouth. Your doctor may monitor your kidney and liver functions before you start treatment with this medicine and regularly thereafter. Inform your doctor if you have severely decreased kidney or liver function. Do not use Pentasa 1gm Suppository if you are allergic to aspirin or if you have blood disorders. Do not stop using the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor.
