Frequently asked questions
Can I take Omezil 20mg Capsule with domperidone?
This medication can be safely taken with domperidone, as no adverse effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medications is also available. Domperidone increases gut motility and Omezil 20mg Capsule decreases stomach acid production. This combination proves effective in treating reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal ulcers and gastric ulcers.
What should I know before taking Omezil 20mg Capsule?
Do not take this medication if you are currently taking a medicine containing atazanavir and nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Inform your doctor if you have liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain or indigestion. Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking as they may interact with this medication. If you experience an allergic skin reaction to this medication, inform your doctor. Omezil 20mg Capsule should not be given to children under 1 year of age or weighing less than 10kg. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers must consult their doctor before using this medication to avoid potential harm to the baby.
Can Omezil 20mg Capsule cause diarrhea?
Yes, it may cause diarrhea as a side effect in some people. This is usually not bothersome, but if you experience persistent watery stools that do not go away along with stomach cramps and fever, seek medical attention immediately.
For how long can Omezil 20mg Capsule be taken?
Take it for as long as prescribed by your doctor. The duration may vary based on your condition. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
Can Omezil 20mg Capsule cause calcium deficiency and osteoporosis?
It can cause osteoporosis (thinning of bones) as it decreases calcium absorption leading to calcium deficiency. This increases the risk of bone fractures over long-term use, such as hip, wrist, or spine fractures. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or are currently taking corticosteroids (which increase the risk of osteoporosis) before starting therapy. Consult your doctor for prevention strategies. They may suggest calcium or vitamin D supplements to reduce this risk.
What are the long term side effects of Omezil 20mg Capsule?
Long-term use for more than 3 months can lead to specific side effects. These include low magnesium levels, which may cause fatigue, confusion, dizziness, trembling, or lightheadedness. Muscle twitches or irregular heartbeat are also potential long-term side effects. Prolonged use (over a year) can increase your risk of bone fractures due to decreased calcium levels in the blood. This can lead to hip, wrist, and spine fractures. Stomach infections and vitamin B12 deficiency may occur as well. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia, which might make you feel more tired or pale. Additionally, palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence (gas), and nerve problems such as numbness, tingling, and difficulty walking are possible side effects.
Does Omezil 20mg Capsule cause vitamin deficiencies?
It can cause vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin B12 absorption in the stomach requires an acidic environment; this medication decreases gastric acid secretion. You may need vitamin B12 supplements alongside Omezil 20mg capsule. The clinical significance of decreased vitamin C levels is not fully known, so vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.
Can Omezil 20mg Capsule be used in cardiac patients?
Patients with heart disease can take this medication as prescribed by their doctor. However, it may interact with certain medications (e.g., clopidogrel, digoxin) that are often used by patients with underlying heart conditions. Close monitoring by a doctor is necessary for patients taking these medications together.
