Frequently asked questions
Can I take Ometec 20 Capsule with domperidone?
This medicine can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing gut motility and Ometec 20 Capsule decreases stomach acid production. This combination is very effective in treating reflux esophagitis, heartburn, intestinal, and stomach ulcers.
What should I know before taking Ometec 20 Capsule?
You should not take it if you are already taking a medicine containing atazanavir and nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Notify your doctor if you have liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, or stomach pain or indigestion. Let your doctor know about all other medications you're taking as they may interact with Ometec 20 Capsule. Inform your doctor about any skin allergies you have experienced to this medicine. It should not be given to children under 1 year of age or those weighing less than 10 kg. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using the medication.
Can Ometec 20 Capsule cause diarrhea?
Yes, it may cause diarrhea as a side effect in some people. This is usually not severe but if you experience persistent watery stools that don't go away, accompanied by stomach cramps and fever, seek immediate medical help.
For how long can I take Ometec 20 Capsule?
Continue taking it as directed by your doctor. The duration may vary based on your condition. Do not stop using this medicine without consulting your doctor first.
Can Ometec 20 Capsule cause calcium deficiency and osteoporosis?
It can increase the risk of bone fractures due to decreased calcium absorption, leading to osteoporosis. Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing osteoporosis or are taking corticosteroids (which may worsen this condition). Your doctor may recommend calcium or vitamin D supplements to minimize this risk.
What are the long term side effects of Ometec 20 Capsule?
Long-term use (more than 3 months) can lead to some potential side effects, such as low magnesium levels in blood which may lead to feelings of fatigue, confusion, dizziness, shakiness, or lightheadedness. Muscle twitches or irregular heartbeats could occur if you use this for longer periods. In the case of prolonged use over a year, there's an increased risk of fractures (hip, wrist, or spine) from decreased calcium levels in your blood. You may also experience stomach infections and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can result in anemia and lead to feelings of tiredness, weakness, or pallor. Additional possible side effects include palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence, or nerve problems such as numbness, tingling, and difficulty walking.
Does Ometec 20 Capsule cause vitamin deficiencies?
It may cause vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. The medication decreases stomach acid secretion, which can hinder vitamin B12 absorption. You might need to take vitamin B12 supplements along with this medicine. While the clinical significance of vitamin C's decline is unknown, vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.
Can Ometec 20 Capsule be used in cardiac patients?
Patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions can take this medication as prescribed by their doctor.
