Oftak Suspension is an antibiotic medicine used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children.
Suspension
Oftak Suspension is an antibiotic medicine commonly given to children for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections targeting the eyes, ears, nose, throat, lungs, skin, abdomen and urinary tract. It is also part of the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment regimen.
Do not panic. You can give the medicine as soon as you remember unless your child's doctor has advised a specific regime for your child. In case of any confusion, do consult your doctor. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Oftak Suspension is an antibiotic. It interferes with the genetic material of bacteria by implanting defects in its DNA. These defects hamper the multiplication of the bacteria and affect its survival as well. Thus, it kills the infection-causing bacteria from growing further and prevents the infection from spreading without making them resistant to further treatment.
Do not panic. You can give the medicine as soon as you remember unless your child's doctor has advised a specific regime for your child. Do not double the dose to catch up. Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid within 2 hours of taking Oftak Suspension as these can affect the absorption of the medicine. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Conditions like common cold and flu are caused by viruses. Never use this medicine for such conditions. Discontinue Oftak Suspension and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing. Only give Oftak Suspension to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses.
Giving an extra dose of Oftak Suspension is unlikely to be harmful. However, if you think your child may have taken more than the prescribed amount, immediately speak to a doctor. Overdose can cause unwanted side effects such as seizures, tremors, severe headache, sudden weakness, unconsciousness, and palpitations (irregular heartbeat). Seek immediate medical attention at a hospital emergency room for your child if you notice any of these symptoms.
If your child does not show improvement after completing the full course of Oftak Suspension, it might mean that the medicine is not effective against the infection-causing bacteria. In such a case, consult a doctor who may prescribe another antibiotic with stronger properties or adjust the treatment plan. It's important to remember that some antibiotics are administered intravenously (IV) instead of orally depending on the condition and severity of the illness.
It is essential to inform your doctor about any other medications or substances your child is taking before starting Oftak Suspension. This helps them avoid potential interactions and ensure safe administration of both medications.
Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a negative reaction in children who have recently been vaccinated. However, before administering any medication to your child during treatment for an illness, it is crucial to consult their doctor. Once your child recovers from the illness, they can receive the necessary vaccinations.
Before starting your child on Oftak Suspension, inform the doctor if they have any of these conditions: heart disease, genetic disorders affecting blood vessels, seizures, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, photoallergy (sunlight allergy), neuromuscular disorders, or rheumatoid arthritis. These are potential aggravating factors for this medication.
