Frequently asked questions
What are the recommended storage conditions for Metogen SR 1 Tablet?
Keep this medicine in its original container or package, tightly closed. Store it according to the instructions on the packaging label. Dispose of unused medicine. Ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot access the medication.
Can the use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet lead to lactic acidosis?
Yes, the use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet can increase the risk of lactic acidosis. This is a serious medical condition caused by elevated levels of lactic acid in the blood. It is also known as MALA (Metformin-associated Lactic Acidosis). While rare, it may be triggered by the use of metformin and associated with underlying health conditions such as kidney disease, old age, or heavy alcohol consumption. Symptoms of lactic acidosis can include muscle pain or weakness, dizziness, fatigue, feeling cold in arms and legs, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or a slowed heart rate. If you experience these symptoms while taking Metogen SR 1 Tablet, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately.
What is Metogen SR 1 Tablet?
Metogen SR 1 Tablet contains two active ingredients: Glimepiride and Metformin. It is a combination medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). This medicine works by improving blood glucose levels in adults when taken alongside proper diet and exercise. Glimepiride lowers blood sugar by increasing insulin release from the pancreas, while metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. It is not recommended for treating type 1 DM.
What are the possible side effects of Metogen SR 1 Tablet?
The use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet may cause common side effects such as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), altered taste, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and headaches. In rare cases, it can lead to serious but potentially life-threatening side effects like lactic acidosis. Long-term use can also result in Vitamin B12 deficiency. To minimize this risk, individuals on long-term treatment should consult with their doctor about Vitamin B12 supplements.
Can the use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet cause Vitamin B12 deficiency?
Yes, prolonged use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet can lead to a deficiency in vitamin B12. It hinders the absorption of this vitamin from the stomach. Untreated, it may result in anemia and nerve problems. Symptoms might include tingling sensations and numbness in hands and feet, weakness, urinary issues, changes in mental status, and difficulty maintaining balance (ataxia). To prevent these complications, incorporating external sources of vitamin B12 into the diet at least once every year is recommended.
Can the use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet cause hypoglycemia?
Yes, the use of Metogen SR 1 Tablet can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level). Symptoms include nausea, headache, irritability, hunger, sweating, dizziness, fast heart rate, and feeling anxious or shaky. Hypoglycemia is more likely when skipping meals, drinking alcohol, exercising excessively, or taking other antidiabetic medications alongside it. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential for managing this side effect. Keep a source of easily digestible sugar like glucose tablets, honey, or fruit juice readily available.
Is it safe to take alcohol while I am also taking Metogen SR 1 Tablet?
No, it is not recommended to consume alcohol alongside Metogen SR 1 Tablet. Alcohol may lower blood sugar levels and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. It can also contribute to lactic acidosis.
