Syrup

Introduction

Give Mefloxacin MS Syrup to your child orally, preferably at a fixed time, either before or after meals. In case your child develops a stomach upset, prefer giving it with meals. Generally, this medicine is prescribed to be given two times a day, in the morning and evening. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of intake, repeat the same dose but do not double the dose if it is time for the next dose. Never change the dose, time, and way prescribed by the doctor since these depend upon the type and severity of the infection, your child's age, and body weight.

How it works

Mefloxacin MS Syrup is a combination of three active ingredients. While two of its ingredients, namely ofloxacin and metronidazole are antibiotics, simethicone is a gas-absorbing agent that improves gastric tolerability of the combination. The antibiotic ingredients interfere with the genetic material of bacteria by impairing its DNA. This kills the infection-causing bacteria, preventing its growth and stopping the infection. On the other hand, Simethicone binds with the gas bubbles produced as a result of the other two ingredients or as a result of some other problem. By doing so, it aids in the removal of gases and provides relief in stomach pain and bloating.

Quick Tips

Diarrhea is a common side effect of this medicine. If it occurs, make sure your child drinks plenty of water. Your child may have an altered taste or furry tongue (coating of Mefloxacin MS Syrup on tongue) after taking Mefloxacin MS Syrup. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help. Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid within 2 hours of taking Mefloxacin MS Syrup as these can affect the absorption of the medicine. Never use this medicine for the common cold and flu as they are caused by viruses and Mefloxacin MS Syrup treats only bacterial infections. Discontinue Mefloxacin MS Syrup and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing. Only give Mefloxacin MS Syrup to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses.

Frequently asked questions

What should I tell my doctor before giving Mefloxacin MS Syrup to my child?

Inform your doctor if your child has a history of heart disease, seizures, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, photoallergy (sensitivity to sunlight), neuromuscular disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, or genetic disorders affecting blood vessels. This is important because Mefloxacin MS Syrup could potentially worsen these conditions and lead to complications.

Can I give Mefloxacin MS Syrup with cough and cold medicines?

No, do not administer Mefloxacin MS Syrup alongside cough and cold medications. This is because a component of the syrup can interact with alcohol-containing cough syrups and potentially trigger a disulfiram reaction leading to nausea, vomiting, flushing, dizziness, etc.

What should I do if my child accidentally takes too much Mefloxacin MS Syrup?

Taking extra doses of Mefloxacin MS Syrup is unlikely to cause significant harm. However, immediately contact a doctor if you suspect your child has taken an excessive amount. Overdose could lead to unwanted side effects such as seizures, tremors, severe headaches, sudden weakness, blood cell abnormalities, and rapid or irregular heartbeats. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.

What should I do if my child doesn't show improvement after taking Mefloxacin MS Syrup for the prescribed duration?

If your child does not experience improvement despite taking Mefloxacin MS Syrup for the entire prescribed period, consult your doctor. Your doctor may suggest a different antibiotic with greater efficacy against the infection-causing bacteria. Please note that certain antibiotics may need to be administered intravenously (IV) in a hospital setting.

Can I give other medicines alongside Mefloxacin MS Syrup?

Mefloxacin MS Syrup can interact with other medications or substances. Before starting the treatment, inform your doctor about any other medications your child is taking. It's also advisable to consult your doctor before administering any medication to your child.

How should Mefloxacin MS Syrup be stored?

Store Mefloxacin MS Syrup at room temperature in a dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the medicine out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.

Can I get my child vaccinated while they are on treatment with Mefloxacin MS Syrup?

In general, antibiotics generally don't interfere with vaccines or cause adverse reactions in vaccinated children. However, it is best to wait until the infection clears up before administering any new medications or vaccines. Once your child feels better, the vaccine can be given after consulting your doctor.

My child has been passing red-brown urine since they started taking Mefloxacin MS Syrup. Is this normal?

Mefloxacin MS Syrup contains metronidazole, an active ingredient that can cause red-brown urine. This is not a sign of disease but rather a common side effect. The discoloration should subside after the medication is stopped and your child's condition improves.
