Frequently asked questions
What is Meconus Injection?
Meconus Injection is a form of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that helps the body create red blood cells and maintain a healthy nervous system. It also plays a role in releasing energy from food and using vitamin B11 (folate).
Why might I not be getting enough vitamin B12 in my diet?
You can get vitamin B12 from sources like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. However, vegetarians or vegans may not obtain Vitamin B12 as it is not naturally found in fruits, vegetables, and grains. This might lead to a deficiency in vitamin B12.
What happens if I have vitamin B12 deficiency?
Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and megaloblastic anemia (a condition in which red blood cells are larger than normal). It may also lead to nerve problems such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Other symptoms include issues with balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness of the mouth or tongue.
Is Meconus Injection safe?
Meconus Injection is generally well tolerated and considered safe for use. However, some individuals may experience rare side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, anorexia, or rash. Discontinue using this medicine immediately if a rash appears.
How should Meconus Injection be administered?
Meconus Injection can be administered directly into a vein (intravenously) or into a muscle (intramuscularly). The usual dose is 1 ampoule (0.5 mg of Meconus Injection), and it is given three times a week. After two months, 1 ampoule (0.5 mg of Meconus Injection) is given every one to three months as part of ongoing maintenance therapy.
What precautions should be taken when administering Meconus Injection?
It's best to avoid injecting the medication at the same location repeatedly. If experiencing intense pain during injection or if blood flows back into the syringe, remove the needle and re-insert at a different site.
