Frequently asked questions
What is Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection?
Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection contains vitamin B12, an essential nutrient for the body. Vitamin B12 helps make red blood cells and maintain a healthy nervous system. It also plays a role in releasing energy from food and using vitamin B11 (folic acid).
Why can’t I get sufficient vitamin B12 in my diet?
Vitamin B12 is often found in meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Vegetarians and vegans may not obtain enough vitamin B12 from their diets as it is not naturally present in fruits, vegetables, and grains. Therefore, people following these diets should take supplements to avoid deficiency.
What happens if I have vitamin B12 deficiency?
Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and megaloblastic anemia (an enlarged red blood cell type). It can also cause nerve problems like numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Other possible symptoms include balance issues, depression, confusion, dementia, memory impairments, mouth or tongue soreness.
Is Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection safe?
Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection is generally well tolerated and considered safe. However, rare side effects like nausea, diarrhea, anorexia, or rash have been reported in some individuals. If a rash occurs during or after using this medicine, discontinue use immediately.
How should Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection be given?
Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection can be administered intravenously (into a vein) or intramuscularly (into a muscle). The usual dose is 1 ampoule (0.5 mg of Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection) and is administered three times a week. After two months, 1 ampoule (0.5 mg of Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection) is given every one to three months as part of maintenance therapy.
What precautions need to be taken while administering Mecolyn 2500mcg Injection?
Avoid injecting the medication at the same site each time. If you experience intense pain during injection or if blood flows back into the syringe, remove the needle and re-insert it at a different location.
