Frequently asked questions
What is Mecolac 1500mcg Injection?
Mecolac 1500mcg Injection contains vitamin B12, an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in the body. It aids in red blood cell formation and maintaining a healthy nervous system. Vitamin B12 also contributes to energy release from food and is necessary for using vitamin B11 (folic acid).
Why can't I get sufficient vitamin B12 in my diet?
Vitamin B12 is found naturally in foods like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. However, individuals following a vegetarian or vegan diet may face difficulty obtaining enough vitamin B12 as it is not present in plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains. Therefore, a deficiency of vitamin B12 can occur commonly in vegetarians or vegans.
What happens if I have a vitamin B12 deficiency?
Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and megaloblastic anemia (an abnormal condition where red blood cells are abnormally large). It might also cause nerve problems such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Other potential symptoms include balance issues, depression, confusion, dementia, impaired memory, dry mouth or tongue.
Is Mecolac 1500mcg Injection safe?
Mecolac 1500mcg Injection is generally well tolerated and considered safe. However, some individuals might experience rare side effects like nausea, diarrhea, anorexia, or rash. If a rash appears while taking this medication, discontinue its usage immediately.
How should Mecolac 1500mcg Injection be administered?
Mecolac 1500mcg Injection can be injected directly into a vein (intravenously) or into a muscle (intramuscularly). The usual dose is 1 ampoule containing 0.5 mg of Mecolac 1500mcg Injection, given three times per week. After two months, the dosage is switched to 1 ampoule containing 0.5 mg of Mecolac 1500mcg Injection once every one to three months as a part of maintenance therapy.
What precautions should be taken when administering Mecolac 1500mcg Injection?
Avoid repeating the injection at the same site each time. If you experience intense pain while injecting or if blood flows back into the syringe, remove the needle and re-insert it at a different location.
