Introduction
Kistan DS Syrup is an antibiotic medicine that helps treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, lungs, teeth, skin, and urinary tract. It is capable of killing bacteria that have become resistant to other therapies and thus also helps treat tuberculosis that is resistant to other treatments.
Directions for Use
Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection.
How it works
Kistan DS Syrup is an antibiotic. It has two active agents amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) essential for the survival of the bacteria. Whereas clavulanic acid serves a special purpose of inhibiting an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that is produced by resistant bacteria. This makes the combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid an effective line of treatment for many types of infections.
Quick Tips
Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Never give Kistan DS Syrup until and unless prescribed by the doctor. Do not give Kistan DS Syrup to treat common cold and flu-like symptoms caused by viruses. Check ‘expiry’ before giving Kistan DS Syrup to your child. Immediately discard all the expired medicines.

Frequently asked questions
Can other medications be taken simultaneously with Kistan DS Syrup?
Kistan DS Syrup may interact with other medicines or substances. It is crucial to inform your child's doctor about all medications they are currently taking before starting Kistan DS Syrup. Consulting a healthcare professional is essential for safe medication combinations and potential risks.
Can I administer vaccinations alongside treatment with Kistan DS Syrup?
In general, antibiotics do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause adverse reactions in children who have recently been vaccinated. However, it is advisable to avoid administering vaccines until a child has recovered from the illness before starting any treatment. Once your child feels better, they can receive the vaccine.
Which lab tests may be necessary for long-term Kistan DS Syrup treatment?
With prolonged therapy, a healthcare professional may periodically monitor kidney and liver function tests to assess your child's overall health and ensure proper medication management.
Can I administer a higher dose of Kistan DS Syrup than the recommended amount for my child?
No, exceeding the recommended dosage can increase potential side effects. If your child experiences worsening symptoms, please contact your child's doctor to re-evaluate their condition and adjust treatment as needed.
Can I stop giving Kistan DS Syrup to my child once their symptoms improve?
No, do not discontinue the medication unless it is completed according to the prescribed schedule. Even if your child experiences symptom relief, the medication may still be actively working and has the potential to clear the infection.
Does Kistan DS Syrup cause diarrhea in children?
Yes, Kistan DS Syrup can induce diarrhea as it is an antibiotic that combats harmful bacteria. It may also impact beneficial bacteria in your child's stomach and lead to diarrhea. Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids if they experience diarrhea. If the symptoms persist or signs of dehydration (reduced urination, dark-colored and strong-smelling urine) are observed, consult a doctor before administering any additional medication.
Are all common colds likely to develop secondary bacterial infections?
Most common colds do not involve secondary bacterial infection. However, it is advisable to consult with your child's healthcare professional regarding the use of antibiotics in managing a viral infection. Antibiotics should only be used after receiving a doctor's guidance.
Why does my child’s nasal mucus change color from clear to yellow-green?
Yellow or green discoloration of nasal mucus is not necessarily indicative of bacterial infection during a common cold. This change in mucus consistency and color is normal during the typical duration of a common cold (7-10 days).
What are signs that my child needs immediate medical attention?
Contact your child's doctor immediately if they experience serious allergic reactions (breathing difficulties, skin rashes), gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea) or liver damage (weakness, paleness, vomiting). These symptoms can be dangerous and warrant urgent care from a healthcare professional.
