Freshcol Syrup is prescribed to treat both constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Constipation presents as infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry stools, while hepatic encephalopathy is a serious liver condition causing confusion, tremors, and decreased level of consciousness.
Yes, Freshcol Syrup is a type of laxative that softens stools by drawing water into the large intestine. It also helps reduce ammonia levels in patients with liver disease.
Common side effects include diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. These may occur more frequently at higher doses. If diarrhea or abdominal pain develops, the dose should be adjusted.
You should continue taking Freshcol Syrup as directed by your doctor for as long as needed. This may include several days to weeks, depending on individual needs and severity of constipation. For hepatic encephalopathy, treatment duration can be extended, even lasting months.
Freshcol Syrup is contraindicated for patients with allergies to it or lactose intolerance (inability to process lactose). It's also not suitable for those with galactosemia, a rare condition where the body cannot process galactose.
Usually, one laxative is sufficient to manage constipation. If further relief is needed, your doctor may recommend adding another laxative in conjunction with Freshcol Syrup. Combining multiple laxatives increases the risk of side effects.
Exceeding the recommended dosage can lead to abdominal pain, electrolyte imbalance, and diarrhea, which may persist for several days. If this occurs, seek medical attention promptly.
