Frequently asked questions

When should I take Esonil Tablet?

Usually, Esonil Tablet is taken once a day in the morning. If you need to take it twice daily, take one dose in the morning and one in the evening. The tablets should be swallowed whole (do not chew or crush) and taken at least 1 hour before a meal with some water.

Can I take Esonil Tablet with domperidone?

Yes, Esonil Tablet can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing gut motility and Esonil Tablet decreases stomach acid production. This combination is very effective in treating reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.

Can I take antacids along with Esonil Tablet?

Yes, you can take antacids along with Esonil Tablet. Take it 2 hours before or after you take Esonil Tablet.

Can I use Esonil Tablet long-term?

Esonil Tablet is usually prescribed for short-term use only. However, if needed, such as for treating peptic ulcer disease and Zollinger Ellison syndrome (ZES), Esonil Tablet may be prescribed for a longer duration. Long-term use may carry an increased risk of side effects. Please discuss this with your doctor. Use Esonil Tablet as advised by your doctor and under their supervision.

What are the long term side effects of Esonil Tablet?

Long-term use of Esonil Tablet (more than 3 months) may lead to certain side effects. The most important ones include low magnesium levels, which can make you feel tired, confused, dizzy, shaky, or lightheaded. You may also experience muscle twitches or irregular heartbeat. In prolonged use for more than a year, there is an increased risk of bone fractures, stomach infections, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, which may cause you to feel more tired, weak, or pale. Additionally, you may experience palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence (gas), or nerve problems such as numbness, tingling, and gait difficulties.

Can I stop taking Esonil Tablet if I feel better?

Abruptly stopping Esonil Tablet after long-term use may lead to increased acid production, worsening your symptoms. Discuss any dose changes or the possibility of stopping Esonil Tablet with your doctor.

Does Esonil Tablet cause weight gain?

Weight gain is reported in less than 1% of patients taking Esonil Tablet, but its exact cause remains unknown. One possible explanation is increased food intake once the reflux symptoms are relieved. Lifestyle modifications like a proper diet and exercise can help prevent weight gain.

Is Esonil Tablet safe to use?

Yes, Esonil Tablet is generally considered a safe medication for most patients. Most people taking Esonil Tablet do not experience side effects. It's crucial to take it as prescribed by your doctor for maximum benefit.

Can I take alcohol with Esonil Tablet?

No, alcohol intake is not advised while taking Esonil Tablet. Alcohol itself doesn't affect the effectiveness of Esonil Tablet but can increase acid production. This may worsen your symptoms.

Can I take Esonil Tablet with ranitidine?

Yes, Esonil Tablet can be taken with ranitidine. Research suggests no significant interactions are found between Esonil Tablet and ranitidine. However, always consult your doctor before taking them together.
