Introduction
Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension is an antibiotic medicine that helps treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, lungs, teeth, skin, and urinary tract. It is capable of killing bacteria that have become resistant to other therapies and thus also helps treat tuberculosis that is resistant to other treatments.
Directions for Use
Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection.
How it works
Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension is an antibiotic. It has two active agents amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) essential for the survival of the bacteria. Whereas clavulanic acid serves a special purpose of inhibiting an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that is produced by resistant bacteria. This makes the combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid an effective line of treatment for many types of infections.
Quick Tips
Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Never give Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension until and unless prescribed by the doctor. Do not give Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension to treat common cold and flu-like symptoms caused by viruses. Check ‘expiry’ before giving Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension to your child. Frequently asked questions
Can other medicines be given at the same time as Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension?
Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension may interact with other medications. Tell your child's doctor about all the medications your child is taking before starting Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension. It is also important to consult with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.
Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension?
Antibiotics do not usually interfere with the ingredients in vaccines, and they do not cause a negative reaction. However, children who are taking antibiotics should wait until their illness is resolved before getting vaccinated. Once your child feels better, you can give them the vaccine.
Which lab tests may my child undergo while taking Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension on a long-term basis?
With prolonged therapy, the doctor may monitor kidney and liver function tests periodically to assess your child's condition.
Can I give a higher than the recommended dose of Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension to my child?
Giving more than the prescribed dosage can increase the risk of side effects. If your child experiences worsening symptoms, please contact their doctor for re-evaluation.
Can I stop giving Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension to my child when the symptoms are relieved?
No, do not stop giving this medicine until the full course is complete, even if you think your child is better. Symptoms may improve before the infection clears. Continue with the medication for the prescribed period as it may still have beneficial effects.
Can the use of Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension cause diarrhea?
Yes, Eliclav-DS Oral Suspension may cause diarrhea. This is because the medicine kills harmful bacteria. Additionally, this medication can affect the good bacteria in your child’s stomach and cause diarrhea. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water or other fluids if they experience diarrhea. If the diarrhea persists and you notice signs of dehydration (less frequent urination with dark-colored and strong-smelling urine), consult your doctor before giving any other medications without their advice.
Do all viral common colds result in secondary bacterial infection?
Most viral colds do not lead to secondary bacterial infections. Giving antibiotics in a viral infection can increase the risk of side effects. Consult with your child's doctor before using antibiotics.
The mucus coming out of my child’s nose is yellow-green. Is it a sign of a bacterial infection?
Yellow or green mucus in the nose usually does not indicate the need for antibiotics. During a common cold, mucus tends to thicken and change color from clear to yellow or green. Symptoms often last for 7-10 days.
Is there any sign which shows that my child needs immediate medical attention?
Call your child's doctor immediately if they experience serious allergic reactions (breathing problems, skin rashes), gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea), or liver damage (weakness, paleness, vomiting). While rare, these side effects require expert treatment.
