Methylcobalamin is a form of Vitamin B12 that is used to treat diseases of vitamin B12 deficiency, such as pernicious anemia, and diseases of effective B12 deficiency. It is notable for being one of the few examples in nature of an organometallic bond. Methylcobalamin is retained in the body better than cyanocobalamin and has been shown to normalize protein transport in nerve cells in people with diabetes. It also exhibits inhibitory effects on nerve degeneration in neuropathies induced by drugs and accelerates the metabolic pathways of nucleic acids, proteins and lipids through its involvement in the transmethylation reaction.
