Acarbose (25mg)
Diacarb 25mg Tablet is used to treat people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps lower blood sugar levels after meals.
Tablet
Diacarb 25mg Tablet should be taken just before or along with the first few bites of the meal. The dose and how often you need it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your blood sugar levels. It may be increased gradually. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. If you do, your blood sugar levels may increase and put you at risk of serious complications like kidney damage and blindness. This medicine is only part of a treatment program that should also include a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight reduction as advised by your doctor. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly while taking this medicine.
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Diacarb 25mg Tablet is to be taken with food.
Diacarb 25mg Tablet is an anti-diabetic medicine. It inhibits the intestinal enzymes responsible for breaking complex sugars into simple sugars such as glucose. This prevents blood glucose levels from rising very high immediately after meals.
Along with your regular doctor visit you might also need regular check-ups with an eye clinic and a foot clinic as well. Your doctor will also advise you to test for sugar in your blood using a home diabetes test kit regularly to check that your sugar level is being controlled. Along with a healthy diet, indulge in light exercises regularly and quit smoking and drinking. If you feel excessively thirsty, pass urine more frequently, and get tired easily, then let your doctor know. These are the signs of very high sugar levels in your blood and your treatment may need adjusting. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) may occur if Diacarb 25mg Tablet is taken along with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or on delaying/skipping a meal. Check your blood sugar levels and have a snack/sugar source for immediate relief.
Diacarb 25mg Tablet does not directly cause hypoglycemia. It may slightly lower blood sugar levels due to its mechanism of action but it is unlikely to induce severe hypoglycemia on its own. However, if taken alongside other antidiabetic medications or insulin, there is a potential risk for blood glucose levels to drop further into the hypoglycemic range. In such cases, consulting with a doctor to adjust your medication dosage is recommended.
Diacarb 25mg Tablet works by inhibiting the digestion of carbohydrates. This process leads to the accumulation of undigested carbohydrates in the colon, which then undergo bacterial fermentation. The result is intestinal gas formation and subsequent flatulence, as well as abdominal discomfort.
Yes, diarrhea is a potential side effect of Diacarb 25mg Tablet. However, its occurrence rate varies among individuals. Certain foods containing carbohydrates such as table sugar can also trigger diarrhea and abdominal pain in some people. If the diarrhea persists or becomes severe, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial.
Diacarb 25mg Tablet should be swallowed whole with water or chewed with the first mouthful of food. It is typically taken twice daily initially, and the dose can then be gradually increased to thrice daily.
If you miss a dose of Diacarb 25mg Tablet, do not double the dose. Wait for your next scheduled time and then continue with the prescribed dosage. Avoid taking extra doses.
Exceeding the recommended dosage may lead to a temporary increase in flatulence (gas build-up), diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. It's advisable to abstain from carbohydrate-rich meals or beverages for 4-6 hours following exceeding the prescribed dose.
Individuals who are allergic to Diacarb 25mg Tablet, suffer from severe liver disease, or have an intestinal inflammation or ulceration (such as Crohn's Disease), should avoid this medication. Similarly, it is advised to refrain from its use in patients with confirmed intestinal obstructions characterized by cramping pain, vomiting, constipation, and the absence of flatus. Lastly, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid Diacarb 25mg Tablet.
