Frequently asked questions
What is Cositra SB 50mg Capsule used for?
Cositra SB 50mg Capsule is used to treat fungal infections caused by Trichophyton spp., Microsporum spp., and Epidermophyton floccosum. The infections can include ringworm, foot infection, groin or buttock infection, persistent nail or toenail fungal infections, and yeast infections of the vagina, mouth, or throat in patients with reduced disease resistance. It is also used for treating cryptococcal infection and infections caused by Histoplasma, Aspergillus, and Blastomyces.
For how long do I need to take Cositra SB 50mg Capsule?
The duration of treatment depends on the type and site of infection, as well as your response. For example, if you are treating athlete's foot (fungal infection of the skin on the feet and between the toes), a dose may be taken for 30 days. In contrast, a vaginal candidal infection may require treatment for 1 to 3 days depending on the doctor’s prescribed dosage.
I am taking Cositra SB 50mg Capsule for nail infection but there does not seem to be any improvement. Can I stop taking it?
No, you should not stop taking Cositra SB 50mg Capsule without completing the entire course because doing so may not completely cure the fungal infection. It can take up to 6-9 months for nail lesions to disappear because after the medicine eliminates the fungus, new nail growth takes several months. Do not worry if you do not see any improvement during treatment.
Why has my doctor asked me to get blood tests done?
Your doctor is likely monitoring your liver function. Cositra SB 50mg Capsule may cause serious liver damage. If you develop symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, or abdominal pain while taking Cositra SB 50mg Capsule, immediately inform your doctor.
Can I take antacid and Cositra SB 50mg Capsule together?
Cositra SB 50mg Capsule can be used if there is sufficient acid in the stomach. Stomach ulcer medications or heartburn medication neutralize stomach acid. Therefore, take antacids or any such medicine approximately two hours after taking Cositra SB 50mg Capsule, and also have a drink of cola.
What is drug resistance? Is it possible to develop resistance to Cositra SB 50mg Capsule?
Sometimes, fungi can become modified in your body, meaning the medicine no longer works as intended. This is known as drug resistance. Resistance to Cositra SB 50mg Capsule has been reported with some candida species (krusei, glabrata, and tropicalis). Cositra SB 50mg Capsule should not be used for infections caused by these species. Taking the full course of Cositra SB 50mg Capsule can help prevent drug resistance.
I have been on alprazolam for quite some time. Is it okay if I start Cositra SB 50mg Capsule now?
Yes, you can take both Alprazolam and Cositra SB 50mg Capsule together, but keep a close watch on the side effects of Alprazolam such as lightheadedness or drowsiness. If these side effects appear after taking Cositra SB 50mg Capsule, talk to your doctor. Your doctor may adjust the dose of Alprazolam.
My doctor prescribed Cositra SB 50mg Capsule to me but not to my friend who had a similar fungal infection because she was on dofetilide. Why is it so?
Your doctor did not prescribe Cositra SB 50mg Capsule for your friend because Cositra SB 50mg Capsule interferes with the working of dofetilide. This interference could cause disturbances in heart electrical activity, which could be harmful to the patient.
