How it works
Cefdex 50mg Syrup is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is essential for the survival of the bacteria. By doing so, this medicine stops the infection-causing bacteria from growing further and prevents the infection from spreading without making the bacteria resistant to further treatment.
Quick Tips
Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection. Give this medicine with food to avoid an upset stomach. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Conditions like common cold and flu are caused by viruses. Never use this medicine for such conditions. Only give Cefdex 50mg Syrup to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses. Stop this medicine and immediately report to your child’s doctor in case your child develops an itchy rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulties while taking this medicine.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I give too much of Cefdex 50mg Syrup?
While extra doses are unlikely to cause harm, contact a doctor immediately if you think your child has taken an overdose of Cefdex 50mg Syrup. This could lead to unwanted side effects or worsen the child's condition.
Are there any serious side effects from taking Cefdex 50mg Syrup?
Possible serious side effects include persistent vomiting, kidney damage, allergic reactions (such as hives), diarrhea, and severe gastrointestinal infections. Always consult a doctor for guidance if these symptoms occur during or after use of this medication.
Can I take other medications alongside Cefdex 50mg Syrup?
Cefdex 50mg Syrup may interact with some medications or substances. Before starting treatment, inform your child’s doctor about all the medications your child is taking to ensure safe co-administration and prevent potential complications.
Can I get my child vaccinated while taking Cefdex 50mg Syrup?
Antibiotics typically do not interfere with vaccine ingredients or cause adverse reactions in children who have recently received a vaccine. However, it’s best to wait until your child recovers from the illness before administering any new medications, including vaccines. Once they are better, you can schedule their vaccination appointment as advised by the doctor.
What lab tests should I consider while using Cefdex 50mg Syrup on a long-term basis?
Your doctor may recommend periodic kidney function and liver function tests to monitor your child's condition while they are on long-term treatment with this medication.
My child has yellow or green mucus coming from their nose. Does it mean they need antibiotics?
Yellow or green mucus does not automatically require antibiotics. During a common cold, the mucus thickens and changes colour. These symptoms usually last for 7-10 days. Please contact your doctor if you have any concerns.
My child has a sore throat and ear infection. Can I give them antibiotics?
No, using antibiotics to treat viral infections is not recommended. Most sore throats and ear infections are caused by viruses. Consult your child’s doctor for appropriate guidance.
Does taking antibiotics always prevent secondary bacterial infections after a viral cold?
In most cases, bacterial infections do not follow viral infections. Using antibiotics for viral infections might provide no benefit to your child's health and may even cause side effects. Always consult a doctor before starting antibiotics.
Can Cefdex 50mg Syrup affect my child’s digestive system?
Cefdex 50mg Syrup can impact children's stomachs, potentially causing stomach upset and diarrhea. The medication can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the gut, leading to an increased risk of other infections. If your child experiences diarrhoea while taking Cefdex 50mg Syrup, do not stop the medicine course immediately. Consult your child’s doctor for advice on managing the situation.
Can antibiotic resistance develop due to Cefdex 50mg Syrup?
Yes, improper use of Cefdex 50mg Syrup can contribute to antibiotic resistance. This means bacteria become less susceptible to medication and may not be fully eliminated by antibiotics.
