Long-term use for more than 3 months can lead to several side effects. Notably, low magnesium levels (causing fatigue, confusion, dizziness, shakiness) and muscle twitches, irregular heartbeat, may occur. If the medication is used for a year or longer, there's an increased risk of bone fractures due to decreased calcium levels in the blood. You might also experience stomach infections, vitamin B12 deficiency leading to anemia (causing fatigue, weakness, pale skin). Additionally, palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence (gas), and nerve problems like numbness, tingling, or walking difficulties may occur.
It can lead to vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. This is because the medicine reduces gastric acid secretion which makes it harder for Vitamin B12 absorption. You may need vitamin B12 supplements along with this medication. The clinical significance of decreased Vitamin C levels isn't clear, so supplementation is not recommended.
Patients with heart disease can use it under the guidance of their doctor. However, certain medications like clopidogrel or digoxin might interact with this medication. Close monitoring by a doctor is necessary when these medications are taken together.
