Tube
The Bos Medicare Surgical Stomach Wash Tube is a medical device used in a procedure called gastric lavage, which is a gastrointestinal decontamination technique. The tube is inserted through the mouth or nose into the stomach and is used to clean out the contents of the stomach. This procedure is used in life-threatening situations, such as drug overdose or poison ingestion, to decontaminate the GI tract. It can also be used to clean out excess bleeding from a haemorrhage.
Insert the tube through the mouth or nose and down the oesophagus into the stomach. Aspirate the stomach contents and save them for the laboratory. Flush the stomach with large amounts of water or normal saline. Attach a funnel to the tube and fill it with the irrigating fluid. Expel air from the tube and raise the funnel to allow the fluid to run into the stomach.
The tube acts as a siphon, with the part of the tube that goes into the stomach acting as the short arm and the part of the tube that lies outside the body acting as the long arm. The tube is used to clean out the contents of the stomach by sequentially administering and removing small volumes of fluid via the tube.
