Allopurizol 300 Tablet is a medicine used to treat and prevent gout. Gout happens when there is too much uric acid in your body and it forms into crystals that can appear around your joints and kidneys and cause pain. This medicine helps to keep uric acid levels low.
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Allopurizol 300 Tablet is to be taken with food.
Allopurizol 300 Tablet is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It works by decreasing blood uric acid which is the chemical that causes gout.
Take Allopurizol 300 Tablet with food to avoid stomach upset. Take plenty of fluids (2-3 litres) daily while on Allopurizol 300 Tablet. Notify your doctor if you develop a rash. This could be a sign of allergy and should go away on discontinuing Allopurizol 300 Tablet. When you first start taking this medicine you might have more gout attacks. Do not stop Allopurizol 300 Tablet on having an acute attack of gout as that could make an attack worse. Your doctor may check your liver function before starting treatment and regularly thereafter. Inform your doctor if you notice yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine, or stomach pain.
Allopurizol 300 Tablet can be taken at any time of day, but it's often easier to remember if you take it at the same time every day. It is usually prescribed once daily and should be taken after meals. If a dose exceeds 300 mg or if your stomach is upset, you may take it in divided doses as advised by your doctor.
While starting Allopurizol 300 Tablet, you may experience an increase in gout attacks (severe pain, swelling, and redness). However, these attacks usually become shorter and less severe over several months of therapy. The reason for increased attacks could be the gradual breakdown of uric acid crystals, leading to fluctuations in blood uric acid levels. Your doctor might advise taking colchicine along with Allopurizol 300 Tablet as it helps suppress gouty attacks.
It can take several months before you feel better or notice any significant reduction in gout attacks. Initially after starting Allopurizol 300 Tablet, you might experience gouty attacks. Continue taking Allopurizol 300 Tablet even if you don't experience substantial relief from the attacks. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. Your doctor will prescribe a different medicine along with Allopurizol 300 Tablet to prevent initial attacks. It may take up to years for uric acid crystals to completely disappear.
You should avoid consuming alcohol while taking Allopurizol 300 Tablet, as this could worsen your condition. You should also avoid foods that are high in protein to prevent gout attacks. Consult your doctor for a detailed list of prohibited food items. It is recommended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water or other fluids while taking Allopurizol 300 Tablet unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
