Acarbose (50mg)
Acarboz 50mg Tablet is used to treat people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps lower blood sugar levels after meals.
Tablet
Acarboz 50mg Tablet should be taken just before or along with the first few bites of the meal. The dose and how often you need it will be decided by your doctor so that you get the right amount to control your blood sugar levels. It may be increased gradually. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. If you do, your blood sugar levels may increase and put you at risk of serious complications like kidney damage and blindness. This medicine is only part of a treatment program that should also include a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight reduction as advised by your doctor. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly while taking this medicine.
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Acarboz 50mg Tablet is to be taken with food.
Acarboz 50mg Tablet is an anti-diabetic medicine. It inhibits the intestinal enzymes responsible for breaking complex sugars into simple sugars such as glucose. This prevents blood glucose levels from rising very high immediately after meals.
Along with your regular doctor visit you might also need regular check-ups with an eye clinic and a foot clinic as well. Your doctor will also advise you to test for sugar in your blood using a home diabetes test kit regularly to check that your sugar level is being controlled. Along with a healthy diet, indulge in light exercises regularly and quit smoking and drinking. If you feel excessively thirsty, pass urine more frequently, and get tired easily, then let your doctor know. These are the signs of very high sugar levels in your blood and your treatment may need adjusting. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) may occur if Acarboz 50mg Tablet is taken along with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or on delaying/skipping a meal. Check your blood sugar levels and have a snack/sugar source for immediate relief.
Acarboz 50mg Tablet does not directly cause hypoglycemia. It may have a glucose-lowering effect, but it's important to note that the use of other antidiabetic medications or insulin might potentially lead to a drop in blood sugar levels, which would require consultation with a healthcare professional for dosage adjustments.
Acarboz 50mg Tablet inhibits the digestion of carbohydrates in the body. This can lead to an accumulation of undigested carbohydrates in the colon, which then gets fermented by bacteria present in the gut. As a result, this fermentation process leads to intestinal gas and subsequent flatulence along with abdominal pain.
Diarrhea is a common side effect of Acarboz 50mg Tablet. However, its occurrence varies from person to person. Any food containing carbohydrates, such as table sugar or regular cane sugar, can trigger diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. If the diarrhea persists or becomes severe, contact your doctor immediately.
Acarboz 50mg Tablet is to be taken with meals. It should be swallowed whole with water or chewed with the first mouthful of food. The initial dose of Acarboz 50mg Tablet is typically twice daily, gradually increasing to thrice daily.
If you miss a dose of Acarboz 50mg Tablet, do not try to make up for it by taking the missed dose at a later time. Wait until your scheduled dose and mealtime before continuing with your medication as prescribed.
Taking more than the recommended dose of Acarboz 50mg Tablet may result in temporary increased flatulence (gas buildup), diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. It's advisable to avoid meals or drinks containing carbohydrates for the next 4-6 hours.
Individuals with known allergies to Acarboz 50mg Tablet, severe liver disease, or intestinal inflammation or ulceration (such as Crohn's disease) should avoid its use. Additionally, Acarboz 50mg Tablet is contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction symptoms like cramping pain, vomiting, constipation, and lack of flatus. It is also recommended to avoid the medication for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
