Frequently asked questions
What is AB-Pril 5mg Tablet? What is it used for?
AB-Pril 5mg Tablet belongs to a group of medicines known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It relaxes and widens the blood vessels, making it easier for blood to pass through them. This reduces the workload on the heart, helping to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It is also used for the treatment and prevention of congestive heart failure.
Does AB-Pril 5mg Tablet cause excessive urination? Can it cause kidney damage?
AB-Pril 5mg Tablet does not cause excessive urination (loss of water through urine). It is unlikely to affect normally functioning kidneys. However, if used with a diuretic (a medicine that increases urine output), there is a potential for kidney damage. In such cases, either the diuretic should be discontinued or its dose reduced. Severe heart failure or existing kidney problems increase the risk of kidney failure, but appropriate and timely treatment can reverse the damage.
Can use of AB-Pril 5mg Tablet affect my liver?
In rare cases, AB-Pril 5mg Tablet may cause yellowing of skin and eyes, loss of appetite, and an increase in liver enzymes. It can also lead to significant liver damage or even death. Therefore, if you experience any such symptoms, call your doctor immediately.
Is it safe to use AB-Pril 5mg Tablet along with hydrochlorthiazide?
Taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet with hydrochlorothiazide can lead to further blood pressure reduction. This combination may also increase the risk of kidney problems, such as reduced urine output, swelling in your legs, ankles, and feet from water retention. Some people may experience unexplained shortness of breath, excessive drowsiness or fatigue, persistent nausea, confusion, pain or pressure in your chest, and seizures (fits). These symptoms usually occur if there is substantial water or salt loss before starting AB-Pril 5mg Tablet. Therefore, if you face any of these issues, contact your doctor. They may advise discontinuing hydrochlorothiazide or reducing its dose. The doctor might also recommend taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet in very low doses when used with hydrochlorothiazide.
I am taking ibuprofen for arthritis, is it safe to take AB-Pril 5mg Tablet along with it?
Combining ibuprofen and AB-Pril 5mg Tablet is not recommended as it carries the risk of kidney damage. Additionally, this combined usage may reduce the effectiveness of AB-Pril 5mg Tablet. Consult your doctor for an alternative to ibuprofen.
How long does it take for AB-Pril 5mg Tablet to start working?
AB-Pril 5mg Tablet begins reducing blood pressure within a few hours. However, full benefits might not be noticeable for several weeks. You may not see immediate changes in blood pressure after taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet; only after your blood pressure is measured will you know it has lowered.
What can happen if I suddenly stop taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet?
You should not abruptly stop taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet without consulting your doctor. Doing so may lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke. If you experience any side effects, consult your doctor who will prescribe another medicine.
Is it safe to take AB-Pril 5mg Tablet for a long time?
AB-Pril 5mg Tablet is generally well tolerated by most people and can be taken for long periods. However, its long-term use might sometimes cause your kidneys to not work properly. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function through regular blood tests.
Can I take AB-Pril 5mg Tablet before surgery?
Inform your doctor that you are taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet before surgery, especially when the use of general anesthesia (to put you to sleep) is recommended. This is because AB-Pril 5mg Tablet can reduce your blood pressure when used with an anesthetic, and therefore, your doctor may advise you to stop taking AB-Pril 5mg Tablet 24 hours before surgery.
